Following the rise of confirmed cases corona virus across the globe, the Word Health Organization (WHO) recently declared it a pandemic. The number of infected individuals is soaring with at least 127,000 cases confirmed, and at least 5,000 dead. However, despite all this, this life-threatening pandemic whose symptoms are characterized by mild symptoms such as a running nose, cough, sore throat and fever, can be curbed by sticking to particular preventive measures as follows;
Stay at home except when you are seeking medical care
Having confirmed that you are mildly ill with covid-19, one should seclude themselves from other people by staying at home except when they want to seek for medical care. Do not use public means of transport like matatus, taxis or sharing bodaboda rides.
Always cover your coughs and sneezes
In order to avoid the spread of the virus which may be hidden in mucus, always practice respiratory hygiene to prevent other people around you from contracting the disease. Therefore, you should cover your sneezes with a bent elbow or use a tissue paper, which should be disposed immediately.
Clean your hands frequently
Always ensure that you wash your hands with water and soap for a minimum of 20 seconds after blowing your nose, sneezing or coughing; and before preparing, eating or serving food. In case you do not have soap and water, you can use a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Also, you should always avoid rubbing/touching your nose, eyes and mouth with unwashed hands.
You must not share your personal items
Avoid sharing drinking glasses, dishes, utensils, beddings or towels in your home. Most importantly, always wash all your personal items with soap after using them.
Wear a face mask
When you are around other people, especially in public places like matatus or market areas, ensure you wear a face mask. If you must interact with someone who tested positive of COVID-19, ensure you wear a face mask or the latter wears a face mask while interacting with you.
Ensure you clean high-touch surfaces frequently
High touch areas include tabletops, counters, bathroom, toilets, doorknobs, keyboard, phones, gadgets and tables. Such areas should be thoroughly cleaned frequently. You should also wipe any surfaces that may have body fluids and blood stains. You should stay at home if you start experiencing a cold, a cough a fever or sore throat. If your situation worsens, call a doctor prior to the visit so that they can put in place measures that will prevent other people from contracting the disease.
